The facility management industry is revolutionising into a digital activity. Being a part of the industry for almost three decades, Rakesh Tripathi, CEO, Tenon FM, understands how this industry has moved – from basics of technology to smart movements in terms of technology.
“We have been using some basic facilities more or less everyday like offices, schools, hospitals, malls and our homes, which are managed. They are managed manually through various activities. Coming to the second level, where it is being used for certain smart elements,” he pointed out.
It’s a requirement and a need today to move towards smart facilities. The smart facilities are no more at the initial stages, it has moved further. He cites the instance of Microsoft’s Redmond facility, which has two million sensors, to make it a smart facility. The Edge facility in Amsterdam has 28,000 sensors.
Citing an example from India, he is in all praise for the Boston Facility, which is located in Gurugram, wherein all activities are managed by smart facility management – even its air conditioning system.
The three broad areas where smart facility management gains its roots from include – AI, IoT and data analytics. “We have embraced in the last six years. IoT is no more about being complex, AI is no more just a buzzword, and the requirement of data analytics doesn’t need to be questioned. All three are essential requirements,” he said.
He goes on to emphasise his perspective by mentioning about Nirlon IT Park, which is in Mumbai.
Speaking at the BW Facility Management Conference & Excellence Awards which took place at Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai on 27 June, 2024, Tripathi accentuated on how smart facilities are the need of the hour, and people in the facility management industry need to gain knowledge with regard to this and implement in a ‘smart’ manner.
